WORKING WITH THE POEM
1. Answer the following questions.
(i) Who is the speaker in the poem?
Ans: The speaker in the poem is a small boy who is standing outside a shed.
(ii) Is she/he afraid or curious, or both?
Ans: The boy is both afraid and curious. He is curious to know what is inside the shed, but he is also afraid because he feels like someone might be watching him from inside.
(iii) What is she/he planning to do soon?
Ans: He is planning to gather enough courage to go inside the shed to discover what is in there.
(iv) “But not just yet…” suggests doubt, fear, hesitation, laziness or something else. Choose the word which seems right to you. Tell others why you chose it.
Ans: “But not just yet…” suggests hesitation. I chose this word because the boy wants to enter the shed and knows there are no ghosts, but something is still holding him back. He keeps telling himself he will go in soon, but can’t make himself do it right now. This shows he is hesitating because of a small fear he can’t overcome at the moment.
2. Is there a room in your house or a house in your neighbourhood/locality where you would rather not go alone, and never at night? If there is such a place and a story to go with it, let others hear all about it.
Ans: There is a storeroom in our backyard that stands a bit away from our main house. We keep all our old and unused things there. I never like going there alone, especially at night. The room is dark and full of strange shadows. One evening while playing in the garden, my ball rolled into the storeroom. When I went inside to get it, I heard some rustling sounds. I felt as if someone was behind me, watching my every move.
My heart started beating fast, and I ran out without my ball. Later, my father went with me to get the ball, and we found out it was just a cat that had made those sounds. Still, I avoid going there alone.
