WORKING WITH THE POEM

1. Why was Dad sure he wouldn’t fall?

Ans: Dad was sure he wouldn’t fall because he thought he was a very good climber. He was overconfident about his climbing skills.

2. Which phrase in the poem expresses Dad’s self-confidence best?

Ans: The phrase that shows Dad’s self-confidence best is: “Easy as winking to a climber like me.”

3. Describe Plan A and its consequences.

Ans: In Plan A, Dad decided to use a ladder to climb the tree and bring the cat down. But the ladder slipped, and Dad fell into the flower bed.

4. Plan C was a success. What went wrong then?

Ans: Plan C was successful as Dad finally reached the place where the cat was stuck. But just when he reached there, the cat jumped down to the ground on its own.

5. The cat was very happy to be on the ground. Pick out the phrase used to express this idea.

Ans: The phrase used to show the cat was happy on the ground is “smiling and smirking.”

6. Describe the Cat and Dad situation in the beginning and at the end of the poem.

Ans: In the beginning of the poem, the cat was stuck high up in the tree while Dad was standing safely on the ground looking up at it. By the end of the poem, the situation had completely reversed – Dad was stuck in the tree, and the cat was free on the ground.

7. Why and when did Dad say each of the following?

(i) Fall?
Ans:
Dad said “Fall?” when his wife warned him that he might fall. He said it with surprise because he was so sure of himself that he couldn’t imagine falling.

(ii) Never mind.
Ans:
Dad said “Never mind” after he fell from his first attempt. He said it to show that he wasn’t giving up, while brushing dirt from his hair and clothes.

(iii) Funny joke.
Ans: Dad said “Funny joke” when his wife warned him again about falling. He thought her warning was silly because he still believed he was a great climber.

(iv) Rubbish.
Ans:
Dad said “Rubbish” after his second fall when his wife worried that he might break his neck. He dismissed her concern because he was still confident and determined to rescue the cat.
