1. Fans don’t talk, but it is possible to imagine that they do. What is it, then, that sounds like the fan’s chatter?
Ans: The noise made by the fan’s motor when it needs oil sounds like chattering. This clicking or humming sound from the fan seems like it’s trying to talk.
2. Complete the following sentences.
Ans:
(i) The chatter is electrical because it comes from an electric motor that needs oiling.
(ii) It is mysterious because we cannot understand what exactly the fan is trying to say through its strange noises.
3. What do you think the talking fan was demanding?
Ans: The talking fan was asking for oil. It was making noise to get attention from the people at home so they would put oil in its motor. After getting oiled, it became quiet again.
4. How does an electric fan manage to throw so much air when it is switched on?
Ans: An electric fan has three blades and a motor. When we switch it on, the motor starts spinning and makes the blades turn in circles. As the blades spin, they push air downward and outward in all directions. This spinning motion creates air pressure that we feel as a breeze.
5. Is there a ‘talking fan’ in your house? Create a dialogue between the fan and a mechanic.
Ans:
Fan: makes a loud clicking noise “Click-click-whirr! Click-click-whirr!”
Mechanic: “Hello there! Sounds like you’re having some trouble.”
Fan: “Yes! I’ve been trying to tell everyone I need help. My joints are stiff and I can’t spin properly!”
