WORKING WITH THE TEXT
Answer the following questions.
1. The old farmer is a kind person. What evidence of his kindness do you find in the first two paragraphs?
Ans: The old farmer shows kindness in many ways. In the first paragraph, we learn that the old couple treated their dog like their own child. They fed the dog pieces of fish with their own chopsticks and gave it boiled rice to eat. In the second paragraph, we see that the old man often dug up soil on purpose just to feed the birds. These actions show he was very kind to animals.
2. What did the dog do to lead the farmer to the hidden gold?
Ans: The dog came running to the farmer and put its paws against the farmer’s legs. It kept pointing to a spot behind him. At first, the old man thought the dog was just playing. But the dog kept whining and running back and forth to that spot. When the farmer followed the dog, it started scratching the ground. The farmer thought it might be digging for a bone or bit of fish, but to his surprise, he found a pile of shining gold!
3 (i) How did the spirit of the dog help the farmer first?
Ans: The spirit of the dog came to the farmer in a dream. It told him to cut down the pine tree and make a mortar and hand-mill from the wood. When the farmer used this mortar and mill, they magically produced heaps of gold for him.
(ii) How did it help him next?
Ans: Next, the dog’s spirit helped the farmer perform a miracle in front of the daimio (the landlord). When the farmer used the ashes from the mortar, they made dead trees bloom with flowers. The daimio was so impressed that he gave the farmer many wonderful gifts.
4. Why did the daimio reward the farmer but punish his neighbour for the same act?
Ans: The daimio rewarded the farmer because when he sprinkled ashes on a dead cherry tree, it magically bloomed with beautiful flowers. This made the daimio very happy. But when the neighbor tried to do the same thing, the ashes didn’t make the tree bloom. Instead, the ashes blew into the daimio’s and his wife’s eyes, making them hurt and angry. The daimio punished the neighbor because he caused trouble instead of creating beauty.

Ans: The Greedy Dog
Once there was a dog who found a big bone. He was very happy with his prize and decided to take it home to enjoy it. On his way home, he had to cross a small bridge over a stream. When he looked down, he saw his own reflection in the water.
The dog thought it was another dog with another bone. He became greedy and wanted that bone too. He opened his mouth to grab the other bone, and as he did, his own bone fell into the water and was lost forever.

- name of author
- how many characters
- which one you liked

- main point(s) as you understand it
I recently read a wonderful story called “The Magic Garden” written by John Peterson. This story has four main characters: Emma, the young girl who discovers the garden; Mr. Wilson, the old gardener; a talking butterfly named Flutter; and Emma’s little brother Tom.
I liked Mr. Wilson the most because he was kind and wise. He knew all the secrets of the magic garden and shared them with Emma when he saw how much she cared about the plants.
The story is about Emma finding a hidden garden behind her new house. At first, it looks like an ordinary garden, but she soon discovers that the flowers can talk and the vegetables grow overnight! Mr. Wilson teaches Emma how to care for these special plants, and she brings her brother to share in the magic.
The main point of the story is that taking care of something helps it grow, whether it’s a plant or a friendship. I also learned that sometimes the most magical things are right in our own backyards.
