Ans:

2. Read the following lines and answer the questions that follow.

(a) Sir Raven, you are a handsome bird.
Such feathers! If you would only sing,
The birds of these woods would call you King.

(iii) Why does the Fox address the Raven as ‘Sir’?

Ans: The Fox addresses the Raven as ‘Sir’ to show fake respect and make the Raven feel important. This is part of his trick to make the Raven feel proud.

(b) The Raven, who did not see the joke,
Forgot that his voice was just a croak.
He opened his beak, in his foolish pride-

(i) Why did the Raven open his beak?

Ans: The Raven opened his beak because he wanted to sing after the Fox praised him. He felt proud and wanted to show off his voice

(ii) Complete the following with one word from the given lines. Fox : clever : : Raven : __.

Ans: Foolish.

3. Why does the Raven forget that his voice is just a croak?

Ans: The Raven forgets that his voice is just a croak because he becomes too proud after the Fox’s praise. He starts believing that he really has a good voice worth showing off.

4. How does Reynard make the Raven sing?

Ans: Reynard makes the Raven sing by praising him a lot. He calls the Raven handsome, admires his feathers, and says that if he could sing, all birds would call him their King.

5. Why does Reynard say that pride is not wise?

Ans: Reynard says that pride is not wise because it makes people do foolish things. The Raven’s pride made him forget his weakness and lose his food, showing how pride can lead to mistakes and loss.

6. Give one reason why the teaching is quite a surprise.

Ans: The teaching is quite a surprise because it comes from Reynard the Fox, who just tricked the Raven. It’s surprising that the trickster is giving a moral lesson after using the same trick himself.

7. Imagine someone praises you too much. How would you react?

Ans: If someone praises me too much, I would thank them but stay careful. I would think about why they are praising me so much and what they might want from me. Too much praise can sometimes mean the person wants something.

LET US SPEAK

Narrate the poem in the form of a story. Give a different ending to the story. You may begin like this:

This is a story about a clever fox named Reynard and Mr Raven. One day…

Ans:

This is a story about a clever fox named Reynard and Mr. Raven. One day, Mr. Raven was sitting on a tree branch with a piece of cheese in his mouth. He had just taken it from someone’s window. Reynard the Fox was walking by when he saw the cheese. He felt hungry and wanted to get that cheese.

Reynard thought of a plan. He went near the tree and started praising Mr. Raven. He called him handsome and admired his shiny feathers. He told Mr. Raven that if he could sing, all birds would call him their King.

Mr. Raven felt very proud hearing these words. He forgot that his voice was just a croak. In his foolish pride, he opened his beak to sing. As soon as he opened his beak, the cheese fell down.

But the ending was different from what usually happens. Instead of Reynard quickly grabbing the cheese, a young squirrel who was watching everything from another branch quickly jumped down and took the cheese before Reynard could reach it. The squirrel then climbed back up the tree and disappeared into its hole.

Both Reynard and Mr. Raven were surprised. Reynard learned that sometimes even clever plans can fail, and Mr. Raven learned not to be fooled by sweet words. The squirrel enjoyed a tasty meal that day!

LET US WRITE

Now, write the story you narrated in the form of a conversation.

Ans:

Reynard: Good morning, Mr. Raven! You seem to be awake so early!
(Mr. Raven just nods his head)

Reynard: Oh, Mr. Raven, you look so handsome today! Such beautiful feathers you have!
(Mr. Raven puffs up his chest proudly)

Reynard: I’ve heard many birds sing in these woods, but they say your voice is the most beautiful of all. Is that true?
(Mr. Raven looks confused but pleased)

Reynard: Sir Raven, if you would only sing for me, I’m sure all the birds of the forest would call you their King!
(Mr. Raven’s eyes shine with pride)

Reynard: Please, won’t you sing just one song for me? I would be so honored to hear your voice.
(Mr. Raven opens his beak to sing, dropping the cheese)

(A squirrel suddenly jumps down from a nearby branch)

Squirrel: Thank you for the cheese! Both of you were so busy with your tricks and pride that you didn’t notice me!
(Squirrel grabs the cheese and quickly climbs up the tree)

Reynard: Hey! That was supposed to be my cheese!

(Mr. Raven looks down sadly)

Reynard: Well, Mr. Raven, I guess we both learned something today. Me, that I shouldn’t count my cheese before I have it, and you, that pride comes before a fall.

(Mr. Raven nods slowly, looking wiser)

Squirrel: (calling from high up in the tree) And I learned that sometimes it pays to be quick and quiet instead of proud or tricky!
